Liss Athletic 3 - 4 Fleet Town

Aldershot Senior Cup 1st Round

Match Report by Steve Cantle

Fleet Town progressed to the second round of the Aldershot Senior Cup on Tuesday night, getting the better of a lively Hampshire League side, Liss Athletic.

Fleet were made to work hard by the Premier Division side for the whole 90 minutes, to record their first win in over two months.

First half goals by forwards, Cameron Scammell and Steve Whitcher opened up a two-goal lead for Fleet by the half-hour. But the home side rallied well and squared matters by the break, with goals in the 35th and 45th from Steve Hardy and Jonathan Noble.

Fleet exerted their seniority after the break and through a series of excellent corners from mid-fielder, Steve Black, seriously tested the Liss defence. Eventually the pressure told and Fleet took the lead again in the 59th minute, skipper Ian Saunders heading in one of Black's corners.

Fleet then continued to control the game but despite creating plenty more scoring chances, had to wait until the 85th minute to seal the game, striker Craig Leworthy finishing well with a left-footed curling shot into the top corner of the net.

Liss netted a further consolation goal on 90 minutes, through Ed Dunnell, but by then, Fleet had done enough to take the tie and move into the second round draw.
