Fleet Town 1-3 Rothwell Town

Dr Martens Eastern

Match Report by Steve Cantle

Fleet's woes continued on Saturday as they lost out in this crucial relegation battle with visitors, Rothwell Town.

The defeat leaves Fleet firmly anchored at the foot of the Eastern Division with only six league matches remaining to salvage something from what has been a hugely disappointing season.

Two goals early in the second half effectively put the game beyond Fleet; this after the visitors had opened the scoring after only 12 minutes.

Once again Fleet were without experienced keeper, Steve May, who together with mid-fielder, Craig Anstey are serving four-match suspensions after recent sendings off.

Rothwell took charge from the off and should have gone ahead after only 4 minutes, when striker, Danny Spencer squandered a simple chance.

Spencer's strike partner, Jon Mitchell then made amends 8 minutes later picking up a loose ball and firing it past an out-stretched Calvin Sparshatt in the Fleet goal.

Gradually Fleet got into the game and soon strikers, Eddie Smith and Richard Mealey were putting the Rothwell goal under some pressure. Smith, the pick of the Fleet attack, created several good scoring chances, but couldn't quite put Rothwell keeper, former Northants opening bowler, John Hughes under enough pressure.

After the break Fleet continued to pressure but were leaving gaps at the back as they pressed for the equaliser. A quick counter-attack led to Rothwell's second, Spencer running on to a long ball, and neatly slotting the ball past a diving Sparshatt into the corner of the net. Twelve minutes later, it was Mitchell's turn to impress as he beat two defenders and cleverly lobbed Sparshatt for his second of the match.

When Fleet finally got one back in the 79th minute, courtesy an own-goal headed in past a stranded Hughes, by defender, James Thatcher, it was the turn of Hughes to show his class, as he again denied Smith with a great diving save.
