Fleet Town 0 - 4 Stamford

Dr Martens Eastern

Match Report by Steve Cantle

There was no sign of a change in fortune for Fleet Town on Saturday as they crashed to their 10th defeat in 11 league games, to remain firmly anchored to the bottom of the Eastern Division table.

Fleet dominated the game for much of the 90 minutes, but visitors, Stamford must have thought it was Christmas all over again as they were handed four gift-wrapped goals to seal a thoroughly undeserved victory.

Fleetıs nightmare began in the 34th minute, when keeper Steve May miscued a free-kick straight to the feet of Stamford striker, Kevin Byrne. With May out of his ground, Byrne had no difficulty in fending off the keeperıs desperate attempts to recover the ball without fouling, and the striker was presented with an open goal to take the visitors into the lead.

Up to that point honours had been fairly even with chances at both ends.  Fleet skipper, Ian Saunders went close with a header from a corner. At the other end Byrneıs strike partner, Malcolm Ndekwe should have done better with a couple of good chances.

After going behind, Fleet recovered their composure quickly and finished the half strongly. Wingman Shaun Hale must have thought he would score when set up by a fine passing move down the right. But he was denied by a great save from Stamford keeper, Ludesk Michalik.

Fleet took control after the interval and tested the 6 foot 8 inch Michalik with a series of well-struck shots, following fluent passing moves. First Craig Leworthy and then Craig Anstey both forced good saves from the towering Croatian keeper.

Fleet were well on top when, against the run of play, disaster struck again in the 65th minute. Another mis-kick out of defence by the Fleet back line was gathered up by Byrne and unchallenged, he was able to pick his spot past an outstretched May from 15 yards out.

Fleet then pressed the self-destruct button, as, in the space of  two further minutes, they conceded two further goals as a result of inexplicable errors in defence.

First May failed to make any contact with the ball when it was slowly passed back to him, and then minutes later failed to gather a shot from Byrne. Each time the striker was left with the simplest of tasks of running on to the ball and tapping it into an open net.

The shell-shocked Fleet side kept going well, urged on by Saunders, but by then the points had been surrendered.
