With four minutes to go Fleet Town looked to have bagged their first win of the season on Saturday, against a tough Tooting side at Calthorpe Park

In the end an 86th minute header from Tooting mid-fielder Scott Kinch from a corner, salvaged what was probably a deserved point for the visitors, and denied Fleet the win.

Kinch’s header came after a 20 minute spell of intense pressure on the Fleet defence, which might have seen Tooting score from any of three or four excellent scoring chances. But some excellent saves from Fleet keeper, Peter Houkes and a goal-line clearance by Lewis Johnson frustrated the visitors’ efforts.

Fleet had led from the 27th minute when striker Shaun Hale struck a perfectly judged free-kick from 20 yards, which curled into the far corner of the net, leaving keeper, James Mercer powerless to stop.

Hale’s goal was the only highlight of an otherwise scrappy first-half in which neither side created a single scoring opportunity.

Fleet started strongly after the break and could have extended their lead through chances to Hale in the 53rd minute, whose header trickled inches past the upright, and, 10 minutes later, strike partner Lee Paul, whose chip over Mercer, rebounded off the bar to safety.

Even after losing their lead, Fleet almost grabbed all the points in the dying minutes, when Mercer had to bring off the save of the match from a fierce shot by Fleet mid-fielder, Gareth Keeping, following a great cross from sub, Craig Anstey
