Wingate & Finchley 4 - 1 Fleet Town

F.A Cup Preliminary Round

  4th September 2004

Fleet exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle on Saturday, crashing out to a strong Dr martens league north London side by a clear margin.

Mick Catlin's side enjoyed plenty of first half possession and almost went ahead in the 3rd minute, when Gary Connolly's shot needed a great diving save from the Wingate keeper, Ed Thompson, to keep the scores level.

But although on the back foot early on, the home side looked dangerous on the break, and only some good saves from Fleet keeper, Peter Houkes, kept Fleet in the game.

Houkes though couldn't prevent the first goal, in the 34th minute, when a fortunate deflection gave Wingate striker, Dean Williams time to pick his spot past Houkes.

Immediately from the re-start, Fleet's Andy Sinton, found the net with a curling free-kick, only the linesman to flag for off-side.

Fleet's best chance of the match came just after the interval, when striker, Lee Paul ran on to great Sinton pass, but couldn't round the advancing stand-in keeper, Ben Rosenblatt, who brought off a brilliant block.

The miss proved costly for Fleet, as within a minute they went further behind, again from a free-kick, which Wingate's Paul Wood curled round the Fleet wall and into the net.

Fleet fought hard to get back in the game. One chance in the 55th minute fell to wing-back, Tony Millerick, but his hurried shot skidded wide of the goal. Then disaster struck again for Fleet, as they conceded two further goals in a minute, both to striker, Dean Williams, who completed a comfortable hat-trick.

Fleet finally got one goal back in the 75th minute, Lee Paul squeezing one past Ben Rosenblattt. But it was all too little to late for Fleet.
