Fleet Town 2 - 3 Bashley

Ryman League Division 1

  14th September 2004

Fleet came close to extending their winning sequence on Tuesday, but some poor finishing again let them down, this time against sixth-place Bashley.

Playing well for most of the game, Fleet's two well-taken, first-half goals were not enough, after the visitors forced home their winner with only two minutes of the match remaining.

Mick Catlin's cause was not helped by having to bring back previously injured strikers, Eddie Smith and Richard Mealey, to replace the injured Lee Paul and Pete Murphy. But with no other changes from the line-up that took all three points from the visit to the Isle of Wight, confidence was high in the Fleet camp.

Fleet started strongly and wingman Shaun Hale looked in very good touch, as he fired in the opener on 18 minutes, from a narrow angle, after running on to a great long pass from mid-fielder, Andy Sinton.

Unfortunately for Fleet, parity was restored a minute later when from a corner, Fleet keeper, Paul Smith appeared to have saved a header from Bashley striker, Richard Gillespie, but the referee ruled the ball had crossed the line.

Bashley then went ahead on 36 minutes, when striker Danny Gibbons mis-kicked a shot at keeper Smith, for the ball to strike a bump and bounce over the hands of the young Fleet keeper.

Fleet responded to this bad luck well and equalised 4 minutes later, with a brilliantly executed goal from Sinton. The 37 year old ex-England international took possession 30 yards out and after a neat one-two passing movement with striker Mealey, fired in across the face of the goal, beyond the reach of keeper, David Elm and into the net.

Fleet continued to pile on the pressure after the break, and but for a fine save from Elm would have taken the lead on 52 minutes, following a fierce shot from striker. Smith.

At the other end, namesake, Paul Smith saved well on numerous occasions as Bashley also pressed forward on the break.

Fleet looked to clinched the game on 81 minutes when a great run and pass back from Smith presented strike partner, Mealey with an open goal from 15 yards out. But the striker rushed his shot, firing well over the target.

The game then looked to be heading for a draw when in the closing minutes a cross from Bashley mid-fielder, Dave Wakefield was deflected by Fleet defender, Steve Riley beyond Smith's despairing dive, and into the net.

Fleet Town:

Paul Smith, Riley, Millerick, Connolly, Darnton, Ian Saunders, Keeping, Sinton, (sub, Middleton, 62 minutes), Eddie Smith, Mealey, Hale. Subs not used: Lewis, Houkes, Jason Smith, Morant.
