Ashford Town 1-0 Fleet Town

Ryman League Division 1

  15th January 2005

Its back to the drawing board for Fleet manager, Paul Holden, as once again his new-look side failed to deliver on the pitch.

With the manager confident of three points ahead of the game, after 90 minutes his side had capitulated against a side which had lost its previous five league games, and had not won a game since October.

Confidence levels were high in the Fleet ranks, after the previous week's game against league leaders, Wimbledon, in which Fleet played most of the football. But despite again dominating the play, Holden's men failed to take their chances, and once again gave the points away after a defensive error.

Fleet started fluently and within a few minutes, the Ashford keeper, John Whitehouse had to save from striker, David Ocquaye. But the new front-man and strike partner, Josh Francois, both then struggled in the wet conditions, and often lost their footing on the heavy, slippery surface.

The only goal of the game came on 21 minutes when defender, Jermaine Hinds lost possession 20 yards out, and Ashford striker, Paul Jones was on hand to drill the ball past an out-stretched Justin Gray in the Fleet goal.

Fleet then rallied well, but were denied by two excellent saves by Whitehouse, both chances falling to Jermaine Hamilton, who was the pick of the Fleet side throughout.

Both sides had chances after the break, but the slippery conditions prevented a fluent game.

On 51 minutes, Gray saved well, preventing Jones from extending the Ashford lead. This after Francois went close at the other end, after a great passing move by the Fleet mid-field.

Late on, Hamilton went close to scoring the equaliser as he just failed to get on the end of a shot from wing-back Bernard Asante, after a blistering run through the mid-field by the promising newcomer.
