Fleet’s fast passing football finally paid dividends on Tuesday night, when they notched up their first league win of the season, at title chasers, Cray Wanderers.
First-half strikes by 18 year-olds, Matty Lewis and James Field did the trick and the three points lifted Andy Sinton's side up several places to 14th spot in the division one table.
The win also lifted spirits at Fleet after the disappointment of losing their unbeaten run in the weekend's cup defeat, when they played 10 against 11 for all but 5 minutes of the game, against higher league, Bishops Stortford. But the win is a perfect preparation for two upcoming home league games against sides currently below Fleet in the table. First up, on Saturday, Fleet entertain Banstead Athletic, with a 3pm kick-off. Followed on Tuesday night by the visit of Tooting & Mitcham to Calthorpe Park, ko 7.45pm.
Fleet took the lead on 5 minutes after forcing all of the early pace against Cray. A cross from the left into the box by Matty Lewis was good enough to find the net, after no-one managed to get a touch on it.
Eleven minutes later it was 2-0 after Field picked up a cross from the left and fired at the Cray keeper. He was then able to run on to the re-bound and tap home. Field’s pace was outstanding throughout the game and by the interval Fleet could have been further ahead, but for some fine saves by the Cray keeper.
After the break Cray fought back, and ex-Aldershot striker, Gary Abbott went close, but shot wide of the upright from close range. But Fleet continued to press, and looked to have increased their lead late on, but Field’s powerful strike re-bounded from the bar.
