Report by Steve Cantle
A header on the stroke of half-time by Fleet skipper, Steve Noakes was enough for Fleet to grab all three points in this scrappy battle at Calthorpe Park. The result maintained Fleet’s unbeaten league run, and kept the visitors, Banstead, still looking for their first win.
Noakes’ winner from a corner in the 45th minute came after a drab first-half looked to be ending goal-less, after neither side were able to dominate. Fleet’s only other chance came seconds before when Banstead keeper, Paul Borg just got his finger tips to a header from Fleet’s Terry Davies to turn the ball wide of the post.
Davies’ resulting corner was knocked down well by Fleet wingman, Tinoi Christie for Noakes to head home past Borg.
A brighter second-half saw both sides raise their game, but Banstead’s front-men, Lewis Wood and John Fowler failed to capitalise on some better possession, never seriously troubling Fleet keeper, Justin Gray.
Fleet had further chances late on to add to their lead, striker, Ed Smith going close with one solo effort on 80 minutes.
