An 85th minute header from striker, James Rose ensured Fleet came away with a point from this tough trip to Walton on Saturday. With other Ryman sides involved in FA Cup matches, the draw moved Fleet up several places to 12th in the Ryman Division One table.
After the disappointment of last week’s heavy defeat against Tooting, this game will have restored some confidence for Andy Sinton’s men, ahead of tonight’s (Tuesday) League Cup 2nd Rd clash at Calthorpe Park, against Hastings United. (ko 7.45pm).
For Saturday’s game, Sinton was able to recall Rose, following a 3-match suspension, but wing-back Don Chislett, was still recovering from flu.
Fleet started brightly, and took the lead after 11 minutes. A strong run down the right by James Field saw the youngster shoot powerfully. Ed Smith pounced when the ball rebounded from the Walton keeper, to net from close range. A minute later, Walton equalised through striker Greg Bull.
Things stayed all-square until the 83rd minute when Bull got his second for Walton. But Fleet fought back well, and two minutes later, good work down the right again by Field and mid-fielder, Will Salmon, set up Rose to head home from close range.
