Fleet came back to earth with a bump on Saturday – their midweek rout of Bashley quickly forgotten – as bottom side Corinthian Casuals gave them a lesson in possession football.
It was the first away defeat of the season for Andy Sinton’s side, and it meant a drop of two league places to 11th.
The game started slowly for both sides, but the Casuals soon took charge in midfield and on 22 minutes opened the scoring with a fine move finished by a volley from defender, Jamie Keith from 15 yards.
Fleet tried hard to raise their game and were rewarded with two chances at the end of the first half, but shots by Paul George and Phil John both missed the target.
After the interval the home side again took control and extended their lead in the 67th minute when Casuals striker, Simon Moore headed in from a long throw-in to make it 2-0.
Fleet continued to press and on 73 minutes, Ed Smith was brought down in the penalty area and was rewarded with a spot kick – which he took himself, smashing it into the top right hand corner – to get his side back in the game.
But Fleet’s revival was to be short-lived, when with 10 minutes to go, Fleet defender, James Mann attempted to clear a cross from the right, but only managed to slice it into his own net.
