Read breaks stalemate for Fleet
Report by Steve Cantle
A late strike by Fleet substitute, Paul Read grabbed the points in this tight thriller at Calthorpe Park. The youngster made no mistake from close range after Ian Griffin ran on to a pass from sub-striker, Jermaine Hamilton and his shot was blocked.
Fleet had dominated possession up to this point, but were held by a tight and determined Whyteleafe defence.
Fleet’s new signing, Adam Wallace had put the home side ahead in the 24th minute, with a brilliant strike from 15 yards. Collecting a pass from wingman, James Field, the ex-Slough front-man turned and in one movement fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.
Fleet would have extended their lead further but for some fine saves by Whyteleafe keeper, Dean Rose. The youngster was at full stretch to save from both Field and Michael Douglas.
The visitors looked dangerous on the break, attacking quickly and also from set-pieces. From one corner just before the interval, defender, Adam Locke collected an un-cleared ball to equalise from just outside the area.
After an even first-half, Fleet took charge. Both Field and Hamilton saw shots hit the post. But Fleet keeper, Paul Smith had to make several smart saves to keep the scores level. The winner came with just three minutes remaining, after a period of intense pressure from Fleet.
