Three more points makes a nice Easter gift
Report by Steve Cantle
A goal in each half sealed this win for Fleet against league new boys, Godalming Town .
Coming two days after the 1-0 defeat of promotion rivals Dover , the win completed a much-needed Easter double for Fleet to lift them to 6 th spot in the league table. Wins in their remaining four games would now guarantee a play-off place for Andy Sinton's men.
Both sides struggled to deal with the hard, dry conditions of the Wey Court pitch, and for the first half-hour, neither side dominated. The first chance came after ten minutes but Godalming's Ahmed Tchankou's close-range shot was well blocked by Fleet keeper, Justin Gray.
At the other end, skipper Steve Noakes saw his header cleared off the line by a defender, following a corner.
Fleet's opener eventually came in spectacular fashion after 36 minutes. Playing out of position in mid-field, Nathan Smart collected the ball on the half-way line and bursting through three tackles scored with a 20 yard drive into the far corner of the net.
The youngster tried a repeat performance of his run, four minutes into the second-half. This time his shot was stopped when he was fouled in the penalty area by Godalming defender, Simon Hamilton. Fleet's Adam Wallace then stepped up and drove the spot-kick beyond the reach of keeper, Andy Parkinson to put his side further ahead.
But instead of going on to add further goals, disaster struck for Fleet five minutes later when following a back-pass, they conceded an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area. Godalming's Shaun Lydon was able to tap in from close range after the free-kick ricocheted off a tight Fleet defensive wall.
For the final half-hour Fleet were forced on the back foot by a re-juvenated home side, but were denied by some fine saves by Gray and great defensive work by Steve Noakes. In the end it was Fleet's defence that kept the club's promotion hopes alive.
