In-form Fleet Town returned with a bang to league football on Saturday, outclassing 4th place Cray Wanderers with another classy display.
Putting the FA Cup disappointments behind them, Andy Sinton’s men now sit a clear second in the Division One table with a game in hand on leaders Dover.
Missing Mark Paterson, Shaun Hale and Matty Lewis from the side that lost to Margate in midweek, Sinton brought in new signing, Scottish under 19s international, Darren Campbell to strengthen his depleted side. The Fleet-based youngster, who had previously been at Farnborough Town and Reading FC made an immediate impression on the left-wing, scoring Fleet’s second goal on 25 minutes, with a fine individual effort.
Fleet had taken the lead four minutes earlier, when Steve Hemmings headed in from close range following a James Field free-kick. Field was in action again on 32 minutes, collecting a loose ball from the right, and scoring with a fine strike into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, after losing his marker with a neat dummy.
Field sealed things 10 minutes later, getting on the end of a pass from the right, and slotting home from close range for his second goal.
The pace slowed after the break and although this allowed the home side a little more possession, Fleet keeper, Justin Gray had a quiet afternoon. Late on all three Fleet subs, Phil John, Nathan Smart, and Jermaine Hamilton had chances to extend Fleet’s lead, but some poor finishing let Cray off the hook.
Fleet are in cup action again tonight (Tuesday) when they entertain local side, Farnborough North End in the first round of the Basingstoke Senior Cup. Kick off is 7.45pm. On Saturday Fleet return to league action, when the visitors to Calthorpe Park are Dulwich Hamlet.
