NEWS FROM FLEET TOWN FC
AUGUST 2006 – WELCOME TO THE NEW SEASON
Its four months since last season's final newsletter. Since this time we won the Basingstoke Senior Cup (2-0 v Andover), England played in the World Cup for a few heart stopping games and we have all sweltered in the sunshine!
The Fleet Town players returned to training in July and by the time the season began on 19 th August we had played a few friendlies and our fitness was good.
We retained the majority of last seasons playing squad and Andy Sinton enhanced it with some new additions. Our first team's pre-season games saw us win six and draw three of the nine played – including a draw at Farnborough Town where we dominated our higher level opponents! Our reserves too were undefeated winning five of their seven matches giving us all cause for cautious optimism for the season ahead.
This season we again play in the Ryman League and non-league re-structuring has meant some strong clubs coming into our division. These will provide us with stiffer opponents this season if we are to be serious promotion contenders come April.
So we have now played four games as at the end of August. We have had a good start with three wins (against Leatherhead, Dover Athletic and Walton Casuals) and just one loss (at Maidstone U) in a game we dominated and should have won. We are currently in 4 th position, a point behind leaders Dartford .
The first team has six games in September three of which are at home being:
- Saturday 2 nd v Thatcham Town FA Cup Prelim Round
- Tuesday 19 th v Tooting & Mitcham United League
- Saturday 30 th v Hastings United League
By a strange quirk we played Thatcham in the FA Cup last season (won 3-2) and it will be a good game. So why not start a trip to Wembley (!) with us this Saturday.
Anyway back to matters at the wider club.
Our Reserves have also started their new season in the Suburban League well in winning both of their opening fixtures.
The Youth team started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Guildford City and have their second match (against Cove) on 30 th August.
Our young people's teams start their competitive matches during September. This season we again have over 450 youngsters playing for either Fleet Town Colts or Fleet Town Girls from u18 to have over 100 girls across seven teams from u10 to u16
In the Club House we have a number of events planned:
- General Knowledge Quiz Night on 8 th September from 7.45pm .
- Octobers Quiz (13 th ) will be in aid of the Ocean Stars Trust charity. With snacks from Sri-Lanka being part of the event.
- All the England games and most Premier Plus matches are shown on our large screen TV in the Clubhouse.
A date for your diary is Thursday 30 th November for the annual Andy Sinton Golf Challenge at Wentworth with more details next month.
