NEWS FROM FLEET TOWN FC
NOVEMBER 2006 – A FEW SETBACKS.
Dear Supporter,
Wow what a month! Five weeks ago we were in top spot in our division but since then we have played eight games (to 2nd December) and won just one. In so doing we dropped to third place with a playing record of 8 wins, 5 draws and 4 defeats. Other teams though have conceded points too, and as such only 7 points separate the top 7 teams in Ryman League Division 1 (South).
The month started with a succession of draws halting our winning run, but three defeats in the last three games saw us take just 7 points from a possible 24. Andy Sinton and Steve Mellor have tried to understand the dip in form and cite three reasons, 1) our opposition raised their game with us when we were top and we couldn’t lift ours as much, 2) we have had significant injury problems with at least six players being sidelined for some games and 3) Lady Luck has gone awol.
Lady Luck left us at Met Police where we lost 4-1 having had 65% of play. She wasn’t there against Hastings when we squandered a 2-0 half time lead to lose 3-2, and finally she deserted us against close rivals Dartford as they scored from their only two shots in the first half before sealing a 3-0 win.
However we are confident of this being just a blip in form and luck. We have as good a team as any in our division and we will continue to attempt to play good quality football. If you haven’t been to watch yet do come as we really appreciate your support and encouragement for OUR team.
In December we have another four home games to play:
Tuesday 5th v Romsey 7.45pm Hampshire Senior Cup
Saturday 16th v Sittingbourne 3.00pm League
Tuesday 28th v Tooting & Mitcham 7.45pm League
Tuesday 26th v Godalming Town 3.00pm League
We are getting excellent coverage in the local papers; our results and performances have seen gates increase tremendously too, up over 60% so far!
Our form meant we had an inspection by the Ryman League to test our readiness for the next level and it highlighted some ground improvements to be made. If you have contacts that can help please let us know, as any professional help is welcome.
As for the other Fleet Town FC teams, things continue to look positive:
The Reserves are a good side and well worth watching, they sit in 3rd position in their division having won 7, drawn 2 and lost 3. The Youth team had three league games this month including a very tight game against runaway leaders Woking (losing 1-0 to an offside looking goal!), and they stay in 3rd place with a record of P8 W3 D3 L2.
In our younger peoples club the older girls’ teams are all doing well in their respective leagues and cups, and we have three u16 girls training with Premier League club academies. In the Colts boys section there is a battle going on in the NEHYL u13’s where our two teams occupy the top two places. In the Surrey Primary League we have three teams topping their respective u9 divisions with Fleet Town Hawks, Ospreys and Eagles all flying high.
Away from the football The Andy Sinton Golf Challenge at Wentworth was a great success. Nine teams entered and the overall team winners were The Road Men with 87 points, Simon Mirams of Indaba won the individual prize with 38 points.
This month saw our best quiz night ever with over 90 people taking part. So if you knew the capital of Finland, the Christian name of Rambo or what CFC’s affect in the atmosphere then you’re good enough to come to the next one (12th January)
16th December is our players and supporters Christmas party. All sponsors are invited and we will also have a Karaoke if your voice is up to it.
In closing may we the committee, the management and all the players at the Club, thank you for your support and wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year.
Up the Blues!
Mike Gardner
Commercial Manager
PS Don’t forget to diary this seasons Sponsors Appreciation Match on 17th March against Kingstonian.
