NEWS FROM FLEET TOWN FC
end SEPTEMBER 2006 – A GREAT START!
September has not just been a good month for Fleet Town ; in fact it's been a brilliant month for us. As we move into October our first team sits on top of the Ryman Division 1 for the first time ever.
We won every game in September culminating in a 4-1 victory over Dulwich Hamlet that saw us leapfrog Dover Athletic and take first position in the League. Our playing record now reads P7 W6 D0 L1 and not surprisingly our goal difference of +11 is the best in the division.
We are playing some scintillating football at the moment and scoring lots of goals. Andy Sinton has assembled a quality squad with strength in depth and a great team spirit. Last month saw two new arrivals - former player of the year Shaun Hale and local Fleet boy Darren Campbell (an ex-pro from Reading and former Scotland u19 captain). Shaun and Darren bring quality, experience and tactical options to the team and have already notched six goals between them!.
Away from the league our only defeat was to Margate in the FA Cup replay (1-0) but after that we went cup goal crazy elsewhere beating Waltham Forest 5-0 in the League Cup and Farnborough N E 6-1 in the defence of the Basingstoke Cup.
Our early success has started to bring higher attendances, more column inches in the local press and more attention from potential sponsors!
The first team has four home games in October and if you haven't managed to take in a game yet now is the time – so for your diaries:
- Tuesday 3 rd v Enfield League Cup (Rnd 3)
- Tuesday 10 th v Hamble ASSC Russ Cotes Cup (Rnd 2)
- Saturday 21 st v Tooting & Mitcham United League
- Saturday 28 th v Molesey League
Our Reserves have also maintained their good start. With a team that combines both youth and experience the lads have won 5 and lost 2 of their first 7 games and as such are handily placed in 3 rd spot in the Suburban League.
The Youth team have a win, loss and draw from their first three league games but most drama came in a thrilling FA Youth Cup tie at Oxford City . Incredibly the score was 6-6 after extra time but sadly we lost 4-2 on penalties.
Congratulations go to the youth team keeper, David Casey, who was selected to represent Hampshire against Dorset and helped our county to a 3-0 victory.
Our young people's teams have all started their respective competitions in September. This season we have Colts teams from aged u7 to u16 playing in either the Surrey Primary or North East Hants youth leagues. We look forward to tracking their results as the season progresses and are confident there will be more successes to report. All our girls' teams have made a good start with the u15 girls winning their first three games including QPR!
In the Club House we have a number of events planned:
- General Knowledge Quiz Night on 13 th October. This will be in aid of the Fleet based Ocean Stars Trust charity. Our quizzes are proving very popular so why not plan to ‘come on down' and take part.
- Englands games against Macedonia (7 th ) & Croatia (11 th ) will be shown on our big screen as will all the Premiership plus games on Sky TV.
Finally, planning for the annual Andy Sinton Golf Challenge is now taking place. If you are a golfer it's an event not to be missed. It takes place on 30 th November at Wentworth and this year is on the famous Edinburgh Course. So if you want to take part or enter a team speak to any of us at the club for full details.
So September 2006 and Fleet Town are top of the league – its good to be a part of the team as a sponsor isn't it!
Up the Blues!
