Darryl Evans’ thoughts after Tuesday nights first league defeat of the season
Darryl Evans shared his thoughts after Tuesday nights first league defeat of the season away at Sandhurst Town.
We came into this game unbeaten in our last 12 matches, with 8 wins and 4 draws. Despite a tough schedule, a few injuries, and suspensions, the team was in high spirits and confident. However, today we were up against a well-drilled, energetic, and hungry Sandhurst team that came out on top and deserved their win.
In the first half, we found ourselves under immense pressure and were fortunate to go into halftime only 1-0 down, thanks in large part to our goalkeeper, Finley, who pulled off some fantastic saves. During halftime, we knew we needed a major shift in momentum, so I made three substitutions, which paid off with an immediate impact as we managed to level the score shortly after the restart.
But credit where it’s due, Sandhurst continued to execute their game plan brilliantly. They took the lead again, and while we managed to equalize once more by the 65th minute, we struggled to gain control of the game. Sandhurst quickly restored their lead just minutes later.
Our players fought hard and kept pushing for a late equalizer, but their keeper made some excellent saves to deny us.
Unfortunately, in the dying minutes, we conceded a penalty while pushing forward, which effectively sealed the game for Sandhurst. Massive respect to Sandhurst, who outplayed us today and deserved the result.
We’ll take this on board, learn from it, and now focus on preparing for our FA Vase game on Saturday, where we aim to bounce back and set things right.
Massive thanks to the traveling fans who deserved better.
