Fleet Town Secure First League Points with Convincing Win over Eversley & California

Fleet Town picked up their first league points of the season in style, recording a comfortable 3-0 win over newly promoted Eversley & California on a pleasant Saturday afternoon at The Easy As HGV Stadium.

Carrying the momentum from Tuesday night’s strong performance against Blackfield & Langley, Fleet were on the front foot immediately. Within the first minute, a cross from the right found Charlie Postance, whose header flew over the bar. The visitors responded quickly with a free-kick just outside the box, but Ross Baker’s effort went straight into the safe hands of Sam Gray.

Fleet dominated possession in the opening stages without creating too many clear-cut chances. Postance had another opportunity after 20 minutes, this time glancing his header wide. The breakthrough finally came in the 27th minute. A couple of shots were blocked inside the crowded Eversley box, but Fleet were quickest to the loose balls. The ball eventually fell to Theo White, who struck a crisp volley into the bottom corner to put Fleet 1-0 ahead.

The lead was doubled just ten minutes later. Space opened up for George Sellick on the right, and he fired a low effort towards goal. It looked a routine save for visiting keeper Josh Selby, but he fumbled the ball over the line to gift Fleet a two-goal cushion. Eversley’s best chance of the half came when Max Laschok drilled the ball across the face of goal, but no one was there to apply the finish. Fleet went into the break 2-0 up, cheered off by a happy home crowd.

The visitors had the first effort of the second half, Baker shooting over from distance, but Fleet quickly reasserted themselves. A neat exchange saw White feed Ollie Burke, whose shot was deflected just past the post. From the resulting corner, Tom Drinkwater’s header was turned behind by Selby for another corner, which Eversley managed to clear.

Fleet’s pressure continued, with Sellick’s shot deflected wide after good work from White and Eoin Fraser. At the other end, a rare Eversley attack saw Ollie Noyes go to ground between two Fleet defenders, earning a free kick and sparking some confusion when a Fleet player not involved in the incident was booked. Baker’s resulting effort drifted harmlessly wide.

In the 68th minute, Fleet put the game to bed. Sellick’s shot was blocked, but Burke was quickest to react, stabbing the rebound home to make it 3-0. Postance came close to adding a fourth soon after, cutting inside from the left but firing high and wide.

Eversley pushed for a consolation in the final minutes. With four minutes left, Sam Gray blocked a Jordi Ebanda effort, and Callum Samuel-Harman’s follow-up rattled the crossbar. Tempers flared in stoppage time when Eversley’s Joe Pantony put in a heavy challenge, prompting calls for a red card from the home crowd. The referee, who had already surprised fans with some unusual decisions, opted for yellow – along with two more bookings for visiting players.

After over ten minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a well-earned 3-0 victory for Fleet, securing back-to-back clean sheets for goalkeeper Sam Gray and a first league win of the campaign.
