Match Report: Camberley Town 1 Fleet Town 1
Fleet Town earned a hard-fought point away at Camberley Town on Tuesday night, with a standout performance from goalkeeper Finley Purcell ensuring the visitors stayed in the game during key moments.
The action started early, with Purcell called into action after just six minutes, making a smart save from a long-range effort by Camberley’s Mikey Burton. Fleet responded almost immediately, as the home side’s goalkeeper, Dom West, had to be alert to claim a dangerous cross from Dean Rule.
Camberley’s first major chance came with controversy. Burton went down in the box under pressure, prompting loud appeals for a penalty, but the officials waved play on. Fleet nearly took the lead after 20 minutes when Nick Medcraft fired narrowly over the bar from just outside the area.
As the first half wore on, both sides continued to threaten. Fleet had a strong penalty claim of their own when Fareed Hakeem-Habeeb appeared to be brought down in the area. Instead of pointing to the spot, the referee booked Hakeem-Habeeb for simulation, which sparked strong protests from the Fleet bench and earned a card for dissent.
Camberley pushed forward after the incident, forcing another sharp save from Purcell after a shot from Richard Pingling. Moments before the break, a Camberley header was once again well held by the Fleet stopper, ensuring the teams went in level at the interval.
Just seconds into the second half, Burton again tested Purcell, whose partial stop required him to scramble back and claim the ball before it crossed the line. The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when a clearance from Purcell was picked up by Henry McDonald, who finished clinically into the far corner to give Camberley the lead.
Camberley continued to press and had a flurry of chances, including a deflected shot from Stan Jones and an ambitious bicycle kick from Jacob Wheeler, which went wide. But it was Fleet who responded next. In the 57th minute, Hakeem-Habeeb broke down the left and drilled the ball across goal. West could only parry the ball into the path of TJ Taylor, who was on hand to slot home the equaliser.
Fleet pushed for a winner late on, with Hakeem-Habeeb and others going close from set-pieces and crosses, but Camberley held firm and the match ended in a 1–1 draw.
Elsewhere, the playoff race remains wide open. Jersey Bulls and Redhill are locked at the top with 93 points apiece, while AFC Whyteleafe sit just behind on 92. Cobham (70 points) and Fleet Town (66) round out the top five. The final round of matches sees Jersey host Sandhurst Town, Redhill travel to Guildford City, and Cobham visit Alton—while Fleet Town host Whyteleafe in what promises to be a thrilling end to the regular season and a decisive battle for play-off positions.
