Match report: Sandhurst Town 4-5 Fleet Town

Fleet Town made the short trip over to Sandhurst on Saturday for this short notice replacement League fixture. Fleet included one of this weeks two new signings, Mihail Marinescu, in the starting line up. It would have been hard beforehand to imagine what a rollercoaster of an afternoon awaited fans of both sides, with Fleet looking for their first away win of the season and Sandhurst still looking for their first win at all of the season.

Despite Sandhurst having some long spells of possession, in an open flowing game, they still came out on the losing side at the end, as Fleet’s well known never-say-die attitude saw them secure the three points right at the death.

Both Liam Harris for Sandhurst and William Lacey for Fleet made several fine saves in their goals, otherwise the game may have finished 6-6 or 7-7.

Fleet Town made the best start to this game when their leading scorer of the season, Connor Young found the net in the first minute. After this early setback Sandhurst Town,
still looking for their first win of the season, dominated possession for long periods of the first half. Sandhurst levelled the score through Harvey Seeman in the seventh minute. Shortly after this the Fleet defence were able to clear a dangerous free kick taken by Amari Fashanu. In a very open game, Fleet Town were denied going back ahead, firstly through a block by Milo Swanton and a minute later Liam Harris in the Sandhurst goal had to pull off a fantastic save.

On Twenty Two minutes Sandhurst took the lead for the first time through Haydon Vaughan, but were only ahead for seven minutes before Connor Young scored again for Fleet Town. Sandhurst could have gone back in front a minute later when Haydon Vaughan was in, but shot wide, chances kept coming for Sandhurst, Massimo Giamattei shot over, another shot from Haydon Vaughan was saved by William Lacey in the Fleet goal, then Amari Fashanu got the ball in the net but was denied by an offside flag. In the last minute of the first half Sandhurst were able to retake the lead, a pass from Haydon Vaughan found Ralph Vigrass to score and the sides went into the half time break with Sandhurst 3-2 ahead.

The second half was only four minutes old when Connor Young struck again to complete his second hat-trick of the season to bring Fleet Town level again. Only three minutes passed before Sandhurst retook the lead when Haydon Vaughan scored his second of the game. The home side pressed hard to extend their narrow advantage, within a space of twelve minutes, Amari Fashanu shot and
hit the bar, Haydon Vaughan and Ralph Vigrass both had shots blocked, to keep Fleet in touch with the hope of getting something from the game. After Seventy One minutes Fleet Town were level, half time substitute Naz Miah finding the net to make the score 4-4. Surprisingly there was over twenty minutes without another goal, until Fleet Town secured the three points when late sub Samual Marks scored in the fifth and final minute of added time to complete a 5-4 win.

Fleet Town are back in action on Saturday 9th September with another Combined Counties League match, at home to Spelthorne Sports, kick off at The Mustard Seed Stadium is 3pm. Fleet Town Women are also at home this weekend, on Sunday 10th, in the first qualifying round of the Women’s FA Cup against Shanklin Ladies from the Isle of Wight, kick off on Sunday is 2pm.
