Vice Chairman Darren Mcgrath on his time at the club so far

It’s hard to believe it’s now been over a decade since I first moved to Fleet back in 2014, time flies when you’re having fun!

My journey with the club began on the touchline, coaching the Fleet Town Colts Leopards at U8 level. We built a fantastic side in those early years,  winning the NEHYL Premier Division was a proud moment that really sparked my passion for football in this town.

Since then, my role within the club has grown and evolved. From helping to bring together facilities for more than 30 youth teams, to serving three seasons as Chairman of the Colts, it’s been a journey that has always been about building something bigger for Fleet Town. In 2019, I was asked by Caroline and the committee to step up as Chairman of the senior club. While I was honoured, I knew I couldn’t commit the time that role deserved alongside my existing responsibilities. Instead, I took on the role of Vice Chairman, and it’s fair to say the commitment has still been all-consuming, but something I’ve been incredibly proud to be part of.

While much of my work happens behind the scenes, it’s what happens on the pitch that defines us. We’ve experienced some real highs and lows in recent years.

The Great Escape

We’ll never forget surviving relegation by the skin of our teeth. It was a period that tested our resolve but ultimately strengthened the club’s character.

The Women’s Game

We successfully rebuilt the Women’s 1st Team, winning Tier 5 in our very first season under a newly formed team and management. Building on that success, I am thrilled that we are championing a new Women’s Reserves team this season

Men’s 1st Team

fter the heartbreak and excitement of reaching the playoffs last season, we stand here today on the brink of promotion back to Step 4. This was a core part of the shared vision we set out in 2022, and seeing it close to fruition is a testament to everyone’s hard work.

“On a personal note, I’d also like to thank my family, my wife Louise and my children Harri and Connie, for their support and understanding.”

Building a One-Club Philosophy

Beyond the scenes, we have worked tirelessly toward becoming a 3-Star Accredited Club. This is the highest FA accreditation possible for a club at our level, signifying that we provide the best possible environment for players of any age. The launch of Pan-Disability football remains a massive highlight for me, ensuring Fleet Town FC is a truly inclusive home for everyone.

Foundations for the Future Behind the scenes, the work never stops. From leading long-term lease negotiations with the local council to driving the commercial partnerships that are fundamental to our growth, we have fought to put this club on a stable path. Two seasons ago, we solidified this with a new governance structureand I have since served as a Board Director.

None of this happens without the people around the club. Our volunteers, committee members, sponsors and supporters all play their part, and we are incredibly grateful for the backing we receive. On a personal note, I’d also like to thank my family, my wife Louise and my children Harri and Connie, for their support and understanding.

Looking ahead, there is a lot to be excited about. We have some important developments to share in the coming weeks, and new people joining us as we continue to grow. Dan Campling coming on board as a Director at the start of this season has been a real boost for the club., our marketing and social output , i beleive, is way ahead of any other clubs at this level. I think I can speak for both of us in saying we’re really excited to be leading the next chapter of the club, building on the foundations that have been put in place.

Finally, I’d like to place on record my thanks to Caroline and Tommy for everything they have given. Their contribution to Fleet Town has been significant, and we wish them both the very best for whatever comes next.

If you’re someone who wants to be part of what we are building here, we are always open to new people getting involved. So please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
