Match Report: Guildford City 1 Fleet Town 4
On Saturday 5th April, Fleet Town travelled to Guildford City for another eagerly anticipated clash with their local rivals, just seven days after their visit to The Easy as HGV Stadium, where Fleet suffered a narrow defeat. The team arrived determined to exact revenge and to ensure they stayed in the mix for a potential playoff spot as the season neared its conclusion.
The match got off to a cagey start, with both teams testing each other’s defences but unable to carve out any real opportunities early on. The first 20 minutes saw few chances, with both sides probing but struggling to break the deadlock. Fleet looked solid at the back, while Guildford relied on a series of set pieces to test Fleet’s defensive organisation. However, as the game wore on, the deadlock was broken when Guildford won a free kick in a dangerous position near the edge of the penalty area.
Kai Zini stepped up to take the free kick and struck it brilliantly past Fleet’s goalkeeper, Finley Purcell, to give Guildford the lead in the 34th minute. The home crowd erupted in celebration, but Fleet Town were not about to be discouraged. Just five minutes later, the visitors were awarded a penalty after a Guildford foul in the box. Leo Decabo confidently stepped up to take the spot-kick, calmly dispatching the ball into the bottom corner of the net to level the score at 1-1, sending the teams into the break all square.
After the restart, Fleet Town came out with renewed energy and shocked Guildford by taking the lead in the 53rd minute. Ryan Case received the ball just outside the penalty area and, with one powerful strike, sent it past Guildford keeper Jacob Terry and into the bottom corner of the net. The goal was a deserved reward for Fleet’s positive start to the second half, and it left Guildford with work to do if they were to get back into the game.
Guildford, now trailing, reacted quickly, showing greater urgency and commitment in their play. They started to dominate possession and made the first changes of the match, including introducing their in-form striker, Deven Reid-Solanki, who had been a constant threat in recent weeks. Reid-Solanki’s pace and ability were expected to make a difference as Guildford pressed forward in search of an equaliser.
However, the pivotal moment of the match came in the 63rd minute. Guildford were awarded a penalty after a tackle in the box, and it seemed like they might have a golden opportunity to restore parity. But Fleet’s goalkeeper, Finley Purcell, was the hero of the moment, diving to his right to produce a stunning save. The crowd, including the Fleet supporters, could feel the tension rising as Guildford began to visibly drop their heads. The missed penalty was a significant blow to their morale.
Fleet Town capitalised on Guildford’s growing frustration. In the 73rd minute, a defensive error from Guildford allowed Ryan Case to pounce on a loose ball in the penalty area. He remained calm and composed, slotting the ball home for his second goal of the game and Fleet’s third, giving the visitors a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Fleet, not content with a 3-1 lead, continued to press forward in search of more goals. Guildford seemed unable to cope with the intensity of Fleet’s play, and their defence began to unravel. With just four minutes remaining, Fleet put the game to bed. Dean Rule was in the perfect position to convert a well-placed cross into the box, and he made no mistake, scoring Fleet’s fourth goal of the afternoon. This final strike sealed a dominant 4-1 victory for Fleet Town.
The result was a huge boost for Fleet Town, as it not only secured the win but also solidified their position in fifth place in the table. The victory was made even more significant by the fact that Horley Town triumphed 4-1 over Tadley Calleva, almost guaranteeing Fleet Town a playoff spot come the end of the season.
With the win in the bag, Fleet Town now shift their focus to their next challenge: a trip to South West London to face Tooting & Mitcham next Saturday. A win there would continue to build momentum as Fleet push for a strong finish to the season.
