Match Report: Late Surge Sees Fleet through in the Hampshire Senior Cup
Fleet Town progressed to the First Round of the Hampshire Senior Cup with a convincing 3-0 win over Blackfield & Langley, though home fans had to wait until the final 20 minutes for the breakthrough in this tie.
Facing Wessex League Division One opposition, Fleet were on the front foot from the first whistle. The early stages saw plenty of attacking intent, but the finishing touch was missing. After a few frustrating results to start the season, there was a sense of urgency—and perhaps a little nervous energy—as several good chances went begging.
The first opportunity fell to Ollie Burke, who cut inside from the right but dragged his shot well wide. From the resulting corner, Liam Avery rose highest and went close with a header that drifted narrowly wide. Avery then turned provider, bursting down the flank and whipping in a cross for Charlie Postance, who fired over from close range.
Postance found himself with two more excellent chances shortly after—both headers—one from a delivery on the left and another teed up by Brad Manning from the opposite side, but he couldn’t quite find the target.

Fleet continued to press, and chances were being spread across the team. Sean Swift saw a powerful strike deflected behind, and the visitors offered only occasional moments of danger on the break. Their best moment came when Richard Bakary raced down the right and fizzed a low cross through the six-yard box, but no one in green could get a decisive touch.
Just before the interval, Burke had one more go, but blazed over, and the teams went in level at the break, with Fleet well on top but unable to break the deadlock.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Fleet dominating territory and possession, but still without a breakthrough—until the 72nd minute.
Fleet were awarded a free-kick close to the byline on the left-hand side. From an acute angle, Theo White whipped the ball into a crowded box. After a scramble and a couple of deflections, it fell kindly to Tom Drinkwater, who reacted quickest to steer the ball home and give the Blues a deserved lead.
The pressure was finally lifted, and just six minutes later, Fleet doubled their advantage. A slick move down the right saw the ball swung into the box, and Ollie Burke timed his run perfectly to power home a header, sparking celebrations in the stands.
In added time, the result was sealed in style. A long ball forward caught the visitors’ defence flat-footed, and Charlie Postance raced through, unleashing a clinical finish past the onrushing keeper. Jack James got fingertips to the shot, but it wasn’t enough to stop it finding the net.
The full-time whistle confirmed Fleet’s place in the First Round proper, where they’ll face the Royal Navy FA at home. A date for the fixture will be confirmed shortly—potentially as soon as Monday 19th August—so please keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates.
