Narrow defeat on a Monday night away to Sutton Common Rovers
Fleet Town made a bright start on Tuesday evening, enjoying the better of the early exchanges against Sutton Common Rovers.
Their pressure was rewarded after 23 minutes when George Sellick delivered a teasing cross into the box. The ball found Lewis Hillary, who showed composure to turn it past goalkeeper Emmanuel Olajide and give Fleet a deserved 1-0 lead.
The visitors continued to press, but were pegged back just 12 minutes later. A quick break from Sutton Common Rovers saw Jordan Ikala take his chance well, firing home the equaliser to bring the scores level at 1-1. Both sides created half-chances as the first half wore on, but neither could find a breakthrough and the teams went into the interval all square.
The second half began with the hosts looking sharper. Just seven minutes after the restart, Stuart Mortimer put Sutton Common Rovers in front with a clinical finish, turning the game on its head. Fleet responded by committing men forward and pressing high, searching for another equaliser. Ollie Burke and Sam Bartlett both threatened with driving runs, while substitute Charlie Postance worked hard to unsettle the home defence.
As the game entered the final stages, Fleet pushed harder, with long balls and crosses into the box keeping the home side under pressure. Sutton Common Rovers defended resolutely, however, blocking shots and closing down space quickly. Nine minutes of added time gave Fleet renewed hope, and they threw everything forward in search of a late goal. Despite their best efforts, the breakthrough never came.
When the final whistle blew, Sutton Common Rovers were able to celebrate their first league win of the season, a result that lifted them up to sixth place in the table. For Fleet, it was another narrow defeat, leaving them 13th as they continue their search for consistency.
