All Square in Top-of-Table Clash

We had to settle for a point from our trip to Redhill on Saturday afternoon. With both sides starting the day in second and third, a win would have taken either team to the top of the table, but in a close-fought battle the game ended all square.

The opening half-hour was tight, with plenty of midfield exchanges and possession split evenly. Redhill had a couple of chances from free kicks but couldn’t make them count. On 35 minutes we made the breakthrough from a set piece of our own. After the ball was swung into the box and Redhill failed to clear, it eventually fell to ex-Redhill man Tom Drinkwater, who converted against his former club to give us a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Redhill levelled on 61 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Timothy Obisanya’s spot-kick was guessed correctly by Louis Knight, who got a hand to it, but the ball trickled agonisingly over the line despite his efforts. We responded well and looked the more likely side to score as the game wore on, forcing Redhill into giving away a string of late free kicks. Three of their players, including ex-Fleet man Billy Oram on his first start for them, went into the book in the final ten minutes. But despite our pressure, the final whistle came with the points shared.

Both sides remain second and third in the table, now just one point behind new leaders Cobham.
