Match Report: Alton 2 Fleet Town 2

The fourth meeting of these two sides this season produced a third draw, thanks to a very late equaliser from Dan Bone.

Fleet Town played with a strong wind at their back in the first half, in the early exchanges, both sides probed for an early advantage, with Adam Poynter coming close to breaking the stalemate, for Alton, after a quarter of an hour but his strike flew wide of the target. Poynter was on target after twenty four minutes, when ex Fleet Town player Mal Thomas played the ball into the space ahead of Adam Poynter, who took control of the ball in his stride and before any Fleet player could react, he struck the ball into the top left corner of the net to put the home side ahead. Fleet Town levelled before the break when Nick Medcraft delivered his corner into the danger area of the box, helped by the wind, the ball found its way into the net after thirty nine minutes.

The second half saw both sides create early chances without being able to add to the score until the fifty eighth minute when Liam Marshall scored to restore Alton’s lead. Alton had good chances to put the game out of sight, but Adam Poynter again shot wide after seventy minutes and six minutes later Alton had a free kick in a dangerous position, taken by Matt Benham in towards George Bennet he failed to make contact with the ball and the chance went begging. Fleet Town had made three changes in the final quarter, including bringing on Dan Bone to keep the pressure on the Alton defence. When a late chance fell to Fleet, it was Dan Bone in the right place at the right time to score the added time goal to rescue a point for Fleet Town and send all their travelling fans, among the bumper 358 crowd, wild in excitement and relief.

Happy Christmas to all our supporters and we hope to see everyone bright and early at The Easy As HGV Stadium on Saturday (28th) for the 1pm kick off against Jersey Bulls.
