Women’s Team Match Report: 2-1 win in North Hants Cup Semi-Final

On 14th January Fleet Town FC Women played Rushmoor Community FC Ladies at the Mustard Seed Stadium in the semi-final of the North Hants Cup. The match attracted one of the largest crowds this season for a Fleet women’s football team match, welcoming around 90 supporters!

Captain, Abbie Burrows, describes the match from her perspective on the pitch. “I’m super proud of the ladies’ work rate against Rushmoor Community. Our history with local rivals Rushmoor has seen a few losses for us, but we did our homework preparing for Sunday, watching past games and learning where we needed to improve.

We went onto the pitch at the start of the game with a confident mindset and an eagerness to win. Rushmoor gave us a good game but we shut them down quickly, applying good pressure which prevented them progressing up the pitch too often.

Despite our efforts with great passes and a few opportunities on goal, Rushmoor went a goal up but our ladies didn’t let their heads drop and Dot scored a beauty to equalise before half time.

Playing uphill in the second half we knew it would be tough but we kept working hard, especially Ellie, our goalkeeper, who made some amazing saves. But it was Molly’s wonderful goal that put us ahead 2-1 with 7 minutes to go.

I was so proud of the girls’ attitude, work effort and determination in the game. Bring on the final!”

Team Manager, Keith Jordan, said “After two previous loses recently to Rushmoor, we changed our shape to 4231 to counter their forward play, and although Rushmoor scored first we didn’t panic, everyone upped their game and we leveled just before half time. The ladies worked even harder in the second half and we got the winner with 7 minutes left on the clock, changed shape again to 541 and saw out the game. Great team performance from the whole squad!”
